A reading of the Gospel to understand the present time, according to the words of Pope Francis, following in the footsteps of the most recent Council: this is the time of mercy, even if men and women of today – as St John Paul II affirmed – seem opposed to this word.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the canonization of St Faustina Kowalska, the apostle of Divine Mercy; and the fortieth anniversary of the encyclical Dives in misericorida. Pope John Paul II prophetically walked the path of mercy, “following,” as he writes in that document, “the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council,” and impelled, “in these critical and difficult times,” by the need to discover “once again in Christ to the countenance of the ‘Father of mercies and God of all comfort’.”

For this reason, he continues, “it is now fitting to reflect on this mystery. It is called for by the varied experiences of the Church and of contemporary man. It is also demanded by the pleas of many human hearts, their sufferings and hopes, their anxieties and expectations.”

In that encyclical, St John Paul II launched “a heartfelt appeal” that the Church might make the mercy of God ever better known. It is a mercy, he writes, “which humanity and the modern world need so much. And they need mercy even though they often do not realize it.” In fact, “the present-day mentality, more perhaps than that of people in the past, seems opposed to a God of mercy, and in fact tends to exclude from life and to remove from the human heart the very idea of mercy.”

Pope Francis, following in the footsteps of the Second Vatican II and of his predecessors, forcefully affirmed “This is a time of mercy” (Apostolic Letter Misericordia et misera, 2016).

It is a proclamation proclaimed with passion, which fills the hearts of many people with joy, but does not fail to arouse in some, even within the Church, doubts and perplexity, if not open hostility. We find ourselves in the same situation described by the Gospel two thousand years ago: “mercy” becomes a “nice” but empty word for those who feel they have no need of it; a word that is inimical to so much of our “justice” that knows only how to accuse and condemn in a summary fashion. The justice of God, on the other hand, saves.

For Benedict XVI, “mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; it is the very name of God, the Face with which he revealed himself in the Old Covenant and fully in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of creative and redemptive Love” (Regina Caeli, 30 March 2008).

The evangelists tell us that the first to oppose Jesus were the scribes and Pharisees, who could not bear to see Jesus behaving mercifully toward even the most notorious and despised sinners, while treating so harshly those who considered themselves to be just, to be true observers and defenders of the Law handed down by the fathers – who themselves had, nonetheless, already spoken of the “merciful and gracious” God (Ex 34:6).

But they could only see God as a judge and chastiser of sinners, the others; and they accused Jesus of transgressing the Law, of blaspheming, and even of being a demoniac. Their rage is understandable: they believed they were righteous, and felt they were being harshly criticized. They thought they were defending God, and God corrected them with hard words.

The harshest words were the seven maledictions hurled by Jesus at the scribes and Pharisees. We read in the Gospel of Matthew:

When the scribes and Pharisees asked Him why His disciples transgressed the tradition of the ancients, Jesus answered:

The words that Jesus promises to address to some who consider themselves believers are also disconcerting:

At that time, very detailed religious norms had accumulated, which could provide security, but had lost what was essential. Jesus, who was criticized by the Pharisees because he ate with publicans and sinners, says:

The Pharisees were accustomed to asking Jesus trick questions, so He would have to answer yes or no, with His back against the wall. Other times they would simply test Him. To one of them, who had asked about the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus clearly revealed that the essence of Christianity is charity:

We know that we will be judged on love, and we already know the questions for the examination of the final judgment. They are the works of mercy:

Our perennial temptation is to “cage” Jesus in our own schemes; but He goes beyond them, as the parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 25: 10-37) reminds us: A man considered a heretic performs an act of charity, unlike the priest and the Levite who see a man left half dead by bandits, but do not intervene. The Samaritan, on the other hand, has compassion, he stops and cares for that man.

God’s judgment is different from our judgements.

Jesus has words of greater esteem for two apparently distant people, who approach Him not for themselves, but for the healing of a daughter and a servant. To the Canaanite woman, He says: “O woman, great is your faith!” (Mt 15:28). And to the centurion, He says, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith” (Mt 8:10). Love overcomes all barriers and labels.

No one likes to be called a Pharisee. But inside each of us there is a “doctor of the law” who judges our neighbor and thinks himself better than the publican on duty, as the famous parable (Lk 18:9-14) tells us: We need to be corrected, sometimes even to be strongly shaken in our harshness.

Jesus says to all of us, “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:20). The justice of Jesus is the mercy that comes to love the enemy. The justice of Jesus is salvation.

The Lord in the Gospel invites us to read the signs of the times, in order to know when He will come (cf. Lk 12: 54-59).

With the latest Council, the Church has continued her journey in understanding the truth of God’s mercy.

Pope Francis continues to travel along this path, as pointed out by St John Paul II: “Apart from the mercy of God there is no other source of hope for mankind” (Homily at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki, 17 August 2002).

Una lectura del Evangelio para entender el tiempo presente, según lo que dice el Papa Francisco, después del último Concilio: este es el tiempo de la misericordia, aunque el hombre de hoy - como dijo San Juan Pablo II - parece oponerse a esta palabra.

Este año es el 20º aniversario de la canonización de Santa Faustina Kowalska, Apóstol de la Divina Misericordia, y es también el 40º aniversario de la Encíclica "Dives in Misericordia". El Papa Wojtyla recorrió proféticamente el camino de la misericordia, “siguiendo – como escribe en ese texto – las enseñanzas del Concilio Vaticano II” e impulsado “en estos tiempos críticos y nada fáciles”, por la necesidad de descubrir en “Cristo el rostro del Padre, que es « misericordioso y Dios de todo consuelo » (...) Por eso, “es conveniente ahora que volvamos la mirada a este misterio: lo están sugiriendo múltiples experiencias de la Iglesia y del hombre contemporáneo; lo exigen también las invocaciones de tantos corazones humanos, con sus sufrimientos y esperanzas, sus angustias y expectación”.

En esa Encíclica, San Juan Pablo II lanza "una vibrante llamada" para que la Iglesia dé a conocer cada vez más la misericordia de Dios " de la que el hombre y el mundo contemporáneo tienen tanta necesidad". Y lo necesitan, “aunque con frecuencia no lo saben". También porque " La mentalidad contemporánea, quizás en mayor medida que la del hombre del pasado, parece oponerse al Dios de la misericordia y tiende además a orillar de la vida y arrancar del corazón humano la idea misma de la misericordia". También porque la palabra y el concepto de misericordia “parecen producir una cierta desazón en el hombre”.

Francisco, en la estela del Concilio Vaticano II y de sus predecesores, afirma con fuerza que este es el tiempo de la misericordia (Carta Apostólica "Misericordia et misera", 2016). Un anuncio proclamado con pasión que llena el corazón de muchas personas de alegría, pero que no deja de suscitar en algunos, incluso dentro de la Iglesia, dudas y perplejidad, si no una hostilidad abierta. Nos encontramos en la misma situación descrita por los Evangelios hace 2000 años: la misericordia se convierte en una palabra "buenista" y vacía para aquellos que no sienten que la necesitan, una palabra enemiga de tantas de nuestras "justicias" que sólo saben acusar y condenar de forma sumaria: la justicia de Dios, en cambio, salva.

Para Benedicto XVI a misericordia es “el núcleo central del mensaje evangélico, es el nombre mismo de Dios, el rostro con el que se reveló en la Antigua Alianza y plenamente en Jesucristo, encarnación del Amor creador y redentor” (Regina Coeli, 30 de marzo de 2008). Los evangelistas nos dicen que los primeros en oponerse a Jesús fueron los escribas y los fariseos, que no podían soportar que el Señor se comportara misericordiosamente con los pecadores, incluso con los más notorios y odiados, y era particularmente duro con ellos, que se consideraban justos, verdaderos observadores y defensores de la Ley transmitida por los Padres, que también hablaban de "un Dios compasivo y bondadoso" (Ex 34, 6). Pero ellos sólo sabían ver a Dios como juez y castigador de los pecadores, de los otros, y acusaban a Jesús de transgredir la Ley, de blasfemar e incluso de estar endemoniado. Su ira es comprensible: creían que eran justos y se sentían criticados duramente. Creían que estaban defendiendo a Dios, y Dios los corrigió con palabras duras.

Las palabras más duras son las siete maldiciones que Jesús dirigió a los escribas y fariseos. Leamos una parte del texto de Mateo:

Cuando los escribas y fariseos le preguntaron por qué sus discípulos transgredían la tradición de los antiguos, Jesús respondió:

También son desconcertantes las palabras de Jesús al predecir que un día se dirigirá a algunos que se consideran creyentes:

En ese momento se habían acumulado una gran cantidad de normas religiosas, muy detalladas, que podían dar seguridad, pero que habían perdido lo esencial. Jesús, criticado por los fariseos porque comía con publicanos y pecadores, dice:

Los fariseos solían hacerle preguntas a Jesús para que respondiera con "sí o no", secos, para ponerlo a la prueba. Otras veces, simplemente, lo ponían a prueba. A uno de ellos que le pregunta cuál es el mayor mandamiento de la ley, Jesús le revela claramente que la esencia del cristianismo es la caridad:

Sabemos que seremos juzgados por el amor, y ya conocemos las preguntas del juicio final: son las obras de misericordia:

Nuestra perenne tentación es enjaular a Jesús en nuestros esquemas, pero Él va más allá, como nos recuerda la parábola del Buen Samaritano (Lc 25, 10-37): un hombre considerado hereje que hace un gesto de caridad, a diferencia del sacerdote y el levita que ven a un hombre medio muerto por los bandidos pero que no intervienen. El samaritano, en cambio, tiene compasión, se detiene y se ocupa de ese hombre. El juicio de Dios es diferente de nuestros juicios. Las palabras de mayor estima pronunciadas por Jesús son para dos personas aparentemente distantes que se acercan a Él no por sí mismas, sino por la curación de una hija y un sirviente. Le dice a una mujer cananea: «Mujer, ¡qué grande es tu fe! (Mt 15, 28). Y a un centurión le dice: «Les aseguro que no he encontrado a nadie en Israel que tenga tanta fe» (Mt 8, 10). El amor supera todas las barreras y etiquetas.

A nadie le gusta que le llamen fariseo. Pero dentro de cada uno de nosotros hay un "doctor de la ley" que juzga a nuestro prójimo y se siente mejor que el publicano de turno, como nos dice la famosa parábola (Lc 18, 9-14): tenemos que ser correctos, a veces incluso fuertemente, para ser sacudidos en nuestra dureza. A todos nosotros, Jesús nos dice: «si la justicia de ustedes no es superior a la de los escribas y fariseos, no entrarán en el Reino de los Cielos» (Mt 5, 20). La justicia de Jesús es la de la misericordia que llega a amar al enemigo. La justicia de Jesús es la salvación.

El Señor en el Evangelio nos invita a leer los signos de los tiempos para saber cuándo viene (cf. Lc 12,54-59). Con el último Concilio, la Iglesia continuó su camino en la comprensión de la verdad de la misericordia de Dios. Francisco sigue recorriendo este camino, como indicó San Juan Pablo II: "fuera de la misericordia de Dios, no existe otra fuente de esperanza para el hombre"
